Australia sends more than 5 million tonnes of food waste to landfill each year – enough to fill 9,000 Olympic sized swimming pools. This type of waste generates approximately 8% of global emissions and costs the economy about $20 million a year.
Food waste is around a third of the waste that Sydney’s accommodation and entertainment sector generates. The opportunities to save money from reducing food waste are enormous, with 1 report finding that the average hotel saves $7 for every $1 invested in reducing this type of waste.
SDP has released a roadmap to eliminate food waste. This will help our businesses commit to measuring food waste, engage staff and guests, and implement actions that avoid food waste being sent to landfill. This work will help identify, and ultimately embed best practice in food waste management in our partner organisations and the broader sector.
